Incorporating Millwork Into a Modern Aesthetic

Italkraft-Millwork

One might think of millwork as traditional and heavy, but built-ins and paneling can also complement contemporary architecture

“Grand proportions are a key element of modern home design. To achieve a contemporary look, wood paneling should always extend from floor to ceiling; never do half of a wall. With modern millwork, you want to really elongate the space and make it appear as tall as possible. It helps create a feeling of vastness.

“Flat panel doors with integrated grips create a clean, uniform look because the idea is to create a monolithic appearance. For tall ceilings, you have to incorporate reveals because most millwork materials are only available in certain sizes, so a reveal will make up for the limitation. Use reveals between panels to create a minimalist, linear design that adds visual intrigue and feels more decorative than plain paneling while still looking clean and contemporary. In general, corners or floor-to-ceiling windows are the best places to start and end wall paneling.” — Candace Matlock, senior designer at ITALKRAFT in Miami
